Five Friends and a Garden Full of Wishes
Some dolls are about adventure. Some are about history. Some are about glamour. The Wellie Wishers are about something much simpler — and much more important. They're about being a good friend.
Created by American Girl in 2016 for slightly younger children, the Wellie Wishers are a sweet little group of best friends who all share one big wish: to be kind to each other. They live in a magical garden, they wear bright wellie boots, they get muddy, they put on plays, and they figure out how to be there for each other.
Here's their story.
How Wellie Wishers Came to Be
By 2016, American Girl had two well-loved doll lines for younger and older children — Bitty Baby for under-fives and the famous 18-inch dolls for ages eight and up. But there was a gap in the middle. Children aged four to seven didn't quite have a doll that suited them — Bitty Baby felt too babyish, and the big 18-inch dolls were a little big to manage.
So in June 2016, American Girl launched a brand-new line: the Wellie Wishers. The dolls were designed to be:
- Smaller — 14.5 inches (37 cm) tall, perfect for smaller hands.
- Fully vinyl — no soft body, so they survive being dragged around the backyard.
- Beautiful but durable — proper American Girl quality at a more friendly price point.
- Wearing wellies — those colourful, unmissable rubber boots that gave the line its name.
The line launched with five characters and was a hit immediately. An animated TV series on Amazon Prime Video followed in October 2016, with 26 short episodes. There are also chapter books written by Valerie Tripp (the author behind many classic American Girl historical stories), an iOS/Android app, and an ever-growing range of outfits, playsets and accessories.
Meet the Wellie Wishers
The whole group lives and plays in a magical garden tended by Willa's Aunt Miranda. They store their wellies there, and they meet up to play, put on shows, solve mysteries and have adventures.
Willa
The animal lover. Willa has long strawberry-blonde hair and bright hazel eyes. She's the first one up a tree and the last to turn away a furry friend. Many think of her as the leader of the group. Her wellies are green with little fawn ears — perfect for a girl who befriends every creature she meets.
Camille
The mermaid of the group. Camille has silky blonde hair, big blue eyes, and a peaceful, ocean-loving personality. She's the listener — the one her friends turn to when they need someone to really hear them. Her teal wellies have little orange fish fins on the toes.
Ashlyn
The princess-in-training and party planner. Ashlyn has long brown hair, brown eyes, beautifully painted freckles, and a passion for all things pink, sparkly and tulle-y. She's just the friend to turn a frown upside down. Her wellies are pink, lacy and sparkly.
Kendall
The artist and inventor. Kendall has gorgeous curly black hair in pigtails and warm brown eyes. She's the creative one who draws and makes things, and she patches up little arguments with handmade cards and patient kindness. Her wellies are bright butterfly-themed.
Emerson
The performer. Emerson has dark hair (often in curly pigtails), brown eyes, and a love of the spotlight. She makes her friends laugh with funny jokes, original dance routines and made-up songs. Her wellies are colourful and ready to dance.
Bryant
Added to the group in 2022, Bryant is the first Wellie Wishers boy doll. He has brown hair, green eyes, and brings a brand-new energy to the garden. His wellies, naturally, suit his adventurous, dragon-loving spirit.
The Books and TV Series
Like the bigger American Girl dolls, the Wellie Wishers come with a whole world of stories. There are over a dozen Wellie Wishers chapter books — perfect for little ones just starting to read on their own.
Titles include:
- The Riddle of the Robin
- Ashlyn's Unsurprise Party
- The Muddily Puddily Show
- Camille's Lemonade Stand
- Willa Goes Wild
- Camp WellieWish
And the animated series on Amazon Prime brings all the characters to life with kindness-themed stories that perfectly suit the four-to-seven age group.
What Makes Wellie Wishers Special?
- Diverse from day one. The original five characters represent a beautifully diverse group of children — including Kendall, who has gorgeous natural curly hair (still rare in mainstream dolls).
- Built for younger kids. Smaller, sturdier, and more manageable than the 18-inch American Girls.
- All about friendship. Every story, every book, every episode comes back to the same theme — being a good friend.
- Beautifully made. The same quality you'd expect from American Girl — silky hair, real eyelashes, painted freckles, lovely face details.
- A whole world to explore. Outfits, garden playsets, doll-sized wellies, and even matching girl-sized accessories so kids can dress like their favourite character.
Will Your Wellie Wisher Fit Our Clothes?
The Wellie Wishers are 14.5 inches (37 cm) tall — quite a bit smaller than the standard 18-inch American Girl dolls. But here's the lovely news: Disney Animator (Toddler) dolls are very close in size and share many outfits, and our smaller-doll clothing range covers them both.

The Doll With Kindness at Her Heart
In a world full of sparkly fashion dolls and battery-powered toys, Wellie Wishers are quietly brilliant. They teach kindness through story, through play, and through the simple act of friendship. They're the kind of dolls a parent feels really good about giving — and the kind a child wants to keep close.
