The Beach Is Hard on Dolls, and Sand Is the Reason
A doll at the beach comes home with sand in her hair, salt in her clothes and, if the day went badly, a mark on her vinyl that was not there in the morning.
None of that is a reason to leave her at home. It is a reason to take the right doll, in the right clothes, with a plan for the rinse afterwards.
1. Take the Doll That Can Take It
A beach day is not the day for the doll with the mohair wig, the cloth body or the good handmade dress.
A vinyl doll with a hard body handles sand and water. A cloth body soaks up both and takes days to dry properly through the middle.
Do this: Choose a hard-bodied vinyl doll for the beach and leave cloth-bodied dolls at home.
2. Dress Her in Swimwear, Not an Outfit
Bathers are the one doll garment designed to get wet and then dry quickly.
A cotton dress in salt water stays damp for hours and rubs sand into everything it touches on the way home.
Do this: Put her in bathers before you leave, and pack one dry set for the trip home.
3. Get the Sand Off Before It Dries
Dry sand brushes off. Sand that has dried into damp hair or a seam has to be washed out.
A bottle of fresh water at the car does more good than anything you can do at home an hour later.
Do this: Rinse her hair and clothes with fresh water at the beach or at the car, before you drive home.
4. Keep Her Off Hot Sand and Out of the Car
Australian sand and a closed car both reach temperatures that soften and mark vinyl.
Warping is not repairable, and neither is the dull patch a hot surface can leave on a face or a limb.
Do this: Never leave a doll in a parked car, and sit her on a towel rather than on bare sand.
5. A Hat Does Two Jobs
A doll hat keeps direct sun off vinyl and hair, both of which fade and dry out with the same exposure yours does.
It also gives a child a reason to keep her own hat on, which is usually the more valuable outcome.
Do this: Pack a doll hat and put it on her at the same moment the child's hat goes on.
6. Bring a Bag for the Wet Things
Wet doll clothes packed in with dry towels means the whole bag smells of salt by dinner time.
A small mesh or plastic bag keeps the damp contained and reminds you to wash them that night rather than next week.
Do this: Keep one small bag in the beach bag for wet doll clothes, and rinse them the same day.
Beach Day Checklist
☐ A hard-bodied vinyl doll, not the cloth-bodied favourite
☐ Bathers on, one dry set packed
☐ A doll hat
☐ A bottle of fresh water for rinsing
☐ A towel to sit her on, off hot sand
☐ A small bag for wet clothes
The Bottom Line
Sand and salt do the damage, and both come off easily as long as you deal with them before they dry.
Take the sturdy doll, put her in bathers, rinse her at the car. The rest of the day looks after itself.
Getting her kitted out for summer? Our doll bathers are made to get wet, and a doll hat keeps the sun off her face.

Notes: Heat damage to vinyl is permanent. On a very hot day, the shade of the beach bag is a better place for a doll than the sand.
