Götz (also written Goetz) is a German doll manufacturer founded in Rödental in 1950 by Marianne and Franz Götz. The very first dolls were made from papier-mâché and sold directly by Franz himself — humble beginnings for a brand that would go on to become one of Germany's best-known doll makers.
From Papier-Mâché to Modern Vinyl
Götz's earliest dolls were handmade from papier-mâché, with the brand later adopting rotation-moulding technology in the late 1950s, a shift that allowed for the more modern vinyl dolls the brand became known for.
A Pioneer in Artist Doll Reproductions
In the mid-1960s, Götz became the first doll manufacturer to reproduce original designs by celebrated Swiss doll artist Sasha Morgenthaler, launching a line that remains significant among collectors.
The American Girl Connection
Götz manufactured the first American Girl historical dolls for Pleasant Company in the 1980s, including the original Samantha, Kirsten and Molly dolls, before production later shifted elsewhere. Some early American Girl outfits and dolls from this era are still identified by collectors as "West German" made.
Still a Family Business Today
Götz has remained a family-run company through the generations, managed since the late 1990s by Anke Götz-Beyer and Uwe Beyer, continuing the founders' original approach to quality doll-making.
