The Doll That Smells Like Vanilla
Pick up a Paola Reina doll for the first time and three things will probably surprise you. The first is the weight — she feels solid, properly made, like dolls used to feel. The second is the face — those big eyes, the painted freckles, the genuinely sweet expression. The third is the smell. Yes, smell. A faint, beautiful vanilla scent rises from the vinyl. Children fall in love at first sniff.
This is what Paola Reina is famous for: dolls that feel quietly, lovingly handmade. Made entirely in Spain, treasured by collectors and children all over the world, and a serious favourite of doll lovers in Australia who appreciate something a little different from the big mainstream brands.
Here's the story behind them.
From a Little Spanish Town Called Onil
Paola Reina has been making dolls for more than 30 years from a factory in Onil, in the province of Alicante, Spain. If that town name sounds familiar, it might be because we mentioned it in our Miniland blog post too — Onil has been the centre of Spanish doll-making since the 1870s. Locals call it the cradle of Spanish toys.
Paola Reina is firmly committed to keeping things that way. Every single doll, every outfit, every accessory is made in their own factory, by their own people, in Spain. The dolls carry the official "Made in 100% Spain" certification — guaranteed compliance with the strictest European Union safety and quality regulations.
Most of the assembly is still done by hand, including face painting and rooting the hair. That's why every doll feels just a little bit different from the next — because she is.
Meet the Paola Reina Family
Paola Reina has one of the most extensive doll catalogues in the world, with collections to suit every age and every type of play. Here are the ones you're most likely to find:
Las Gordis (around 34 cm)
The most popular and best-known collection — and our personal favourite. "Gordi" means "chubby" in Spanish, and it's a term of affection. These dolls have soft, lovable faces with adorable rosy cheeks, big eyes, and the sweetest expressions. They're made from soft vinyl with that signature vanilla scent, and they're the perfect size for cuddles. Beautiful first dolls for younger children.
Las Amigas (around 32 cm)
The brand's classic collection. Las Amigas means "the friends," and that's exactly what they are — a whole world of girls (and a couple of boys) with different hair colours, eye colours and skin tones. They have lovely freckled faces, fine painted features, and an enormous range of outfits and accessories.
Some of the much-loved Las Amigas characters include Manica, Dasha, Cristi, Cleo, Liu, Cécile, Carmen, Carol — and the boy dolls Dario and others. Paola Reina is constantly adding new characters too.
Mini Amigas (around 21 cm)
Pocket-sized versions of Las Amigas, perfect for travelling or for smaller hands. They have articulated heads, shoulders and legs, and the same sweet detailing as the bigger dolls.
Los Peques
Soft, cuddly toddler-style dolls — wonderful for nurturing play.
Los Manus
Soft-bodied dolls with simple, friendly faces. Ideal for the very youngest children.
Bebitos / Bebés
Newborn baby dolls in different sizes — a classic Spanish baby doll experience, with all the realism you'd expect from a brand of this calibre.
Soy Tú ("I Am You")
A 42-cm articulated, vinyl-bodied doll with multiple poseable joints — perfect for older children who want a doll for storytelling and pretend play.
Gorjuss
A collaboration with the popular Gorjuss illustration brand by Suzanne Woolcott — sweet, big-eyed dolls inspired by the famous artwork.
Andy Primavera, Alex & Sonia, Pikolines
Smaller speciality lines, including charming baby dolls and toddler-style dolls.
What Makes Paola Reina Dolls Special?
1. Made entirely in Spain by hand
This is rare. While most of the world's dolls are made in factories overseas, every Paola Reina doll is made in Onil, by hand. You can feel the difference.
2. The signature vanilla scent
The soft vinyl is gently scented with vanilla. It's not a perfume — it's a faint, sweet smell built right into the material. Children find it incredibly comforting.
3. Beautifully detailed faces
The dolls are known for their painted freckles, fine eyelashes, soft blushing cheeks, and expressions that genuinely look like real children. Each face is carefully painted by hand.
4. High-quality nylon hair
Their hair is rooted nylon — not the cheap fibre you'll find on lower-end dolls. It can be brushed, washed and styled, and stays looking lovely for years.
5. Free of harmful chemicals
BPA-free, phthalate-free, CE certified. Made to the strictest European safety standards.
6. They're collectable
Paola Reina dolls are loved by adult collectors as well as children. Special editions sell out quickly, and the brand releases new designs every year.
