A Doll's Second Childhood
One of the nicest things about a well-made doll is that she often outlasts the child she was bought for. When a younger sibling is ready, handing her down gives her a second run.
It's worth doing properly, though — both for the doll's condition and for the older child's feelings about letting her go.
1. Give Her a Full Refresh First
A doll arriving looking tired and grubby doesn't feel like a gift, and a younger child is far more likely to bond with one who looks cared for.

2. Check She Suits a Younger Age Group
Dolls that were fine for an older child can carry small parts, loose accessories or damaged edges that aren't appropriate for a toddler.
Do this: Check for loose eyes, split seams, sharp broken plastic and tiny detachable accessories, and set aside anything that isn't suitable yet.
3. Decide What Travels With Her
Handing over the entire wardrobe at once can be overwhelming, and it removes the older child's connection to pieces they may still care about.
Do this: Pass on the everyday clothes and shoes, and let the older child keep one or two outfits that mean something to them.
4. Involve the Older Child in the Handover
A doll that's taken rather than given can leave lasting resentment, even when the older child had genuinely stopped playing with her.
Do this: Let them do the giving — choosing the outfit she'll wear, explaining her name and history — so it reads as generosity rather than loss.
5. Mark the Change With a Fresh Outfit
A new outfit signals a new chapter and helps the younger child feel the doll is theirs rather than a borrowed hand-me-down.
Do this: One new piece is enough. It doesn't need to be expensive to do the job.
6. Keep Something as a Keepsake
The older child's memories are usually attached to a specific outfit or accessory rather than to the doll herself.
