The Layers Nobody Photographs Are the Ones Doing the Work
Underwear, socks and base layers are the least interesting things in a doll wardrobe and the first things left out of a purchase.
They are also the pieces that decide whether the dress above them hangs properly and whether the shoes stay on. Skipping them shows in every other item.
1. Bloomers Make Dresses Sit Properly
A doll dress over bare vinyl clings, rides up and twists as soon as the doll is moved. The fabric has nothing to slide against.
A pair of bloomers or shorts underneath gives the skirt a surface to fall over, and the whole outfit stops looking like it was thrown on.
Do this: Put bloomers under every dress, including ones sold without them — the improvement in how the skirt hangs is immediate.
2. Socks Change Shoe Fit
Doll shoes are made to a fixed size, and sock thickness is the variable. A thick sock can make a correctly sized shoe impossible to fasten.
The reverse is also true: a shoe that keeps slipping off often stays on with a sock added.
Do this: Fit shoes with the socks the doll will actually wear, never barefoot.
3. A Base Layer Protects the Outfit
Dark or heavily dyed doll clothing can mark pale vinyl, particularly in warm weather or if the doll is stored dressed.
A thin base layer between the two takes that contact instead.
Do this: Use a plain singlet or bodysuit under anything dark or new, especially if the doll will be left dressed for a long time.
4. Buy Multiples, Not Singles
Basics are worn constantly and washed constantly. One pair means the doll is either in dirty underwear or none.
They are also the cheapest items in the wardrobe, so buying two or three at once costs very little.
Do this: Buy basics in twos and threes; buy feature pieces one at a time.
5. Choose Soft Elastic
Elastic sized for adult clothing is stiff at doll scale and leaves permanent marks in soft vinyl, particularly around the waist and thighs.
Narrow, soft elastic holds well without pressing in.
Do this: Check that a waistband can be stretched easily between two fingers; if it resists, it will mark the doll.
6. Store Small Items Together
Doll socks and underwear are the single most-lost category in any doll wardrobe. They are small, pale and easily mistaken for rubbish.
One container for all basics beats scattering them through the outfit storage.
Do this: Give basics their own small box or zip bag, and pair socks the moment they come off.

Basics are cheap, boring, and the reason everything else looks right. They are the highest-return purchase in a doll wardrobe.
