The Small Stuff Disappears and Wears Out First
Shoes, bags, glasses, hats and hair clips are almost always the first casualties of doll play — lost down the side of a couch, chewed by the family dog, or simply worn out from being wrestled on and off small feet. A few habits keep the accessory collection intact for longer.
1. Shoes: The Fit Matters More Than It Looks
Forcing an ill-fitting shoe onto a doll’s foot is one of the most common ways small plastic shoes crack or vinyl feet get stretched.
Do this: Check shoe size against the specific doll model before forcing a fit, and ease shoes on gently rather than pushing.
2. Cleaning Plastic and Vinyl Shoes
Most doll shoes are moulded plastic or soft vinyl, which can scuff, discolour or crack with the wrong cleaner.
Do this instead: A damp cloth with mild soap for everyday grime. Avoid submerging shoes for extended periods, and skip anything acetone-based entirely.
3. Fabric Shoes and Accessories
Fabric-covered shoes, bags and hats need the same gentle approach as doll clothing.
Do this instead: Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, and air dry flat to avoid stretching or warping the shape.
4. Keep Sets Together
Small accessories are far more likely to go missing when stored loose rather than grouped with their matching outfit.
Do this instead: Store shoes, bags and hair accessories in a small labelled pouch or divided container alongside the outfit they belong to.
5. Glasses and Delicate Accessories
Doll glasses and other delicate plastic accessories snap easily under the pressure of a small child’s hands.
Do this instead: Store separately from heavier items that could crush them, and supervise fitting on younger dolls’ faces where the fit is tight.
6. Watch for Choking Hazards
Small doll accessories are, by nature, small — and worth treating with the same caution as any small toy part around young children.
Do this instead: Follow age recommendations for accessory-heavy sets, and supervise play with very young children around detachable small parts.
7. Rotating and Refreshing a Collection
Accessories that never get used tend to get lost in storage over time, while overused ones wear out faster than the rest of the wardrobe.
Do this instead: Periodically rotate which accessories are in active use, keeping the rest safely stored together rather than scattered.

- A divided container or small labelled pouches, one per outfit
- Shoes paired and stored together, not loose
- Delicate items (glasses, jewellery) separated from heavier accessories
- A “lost and found” spot for anything separated from its set
